KALBARRI

£144,000

Retro Rampart in Excellent Condition

Kalbarri is a beautifully restored Rampart 39, built by the renowned Desty’s yard in 1980 and believed to be one of only four examples of this design. She also represents one of the last wooden boats built by the yard, placing her at the closing chapter of traditional Rampart construction before boating moved more firmly into the age of fibreglass production.

At 39ft 6ins, with an 11ft 6ins beam and a displacement of approximately 24 tons, Kalbarri has the scale, comfort and presence of a true gentleman’s motor yacht. Her construction is solid Iroko, with Iroko laid over plywood, giving her both strength and warmth. She has the reassuring feel of a substantial wooden cruiser, yet with the layout and systems expected for relaxed modern use.

Kalbarri spent her early life on the south coast around Dartmouth, later moving to Ipswich before arriving on the Thames in 2012. By that stage she had been adapted more as a liveaboard for two, with a forward double cabin, midships bathroom and large aft saloon. In 2018, David and Susie Morris purchased her with the intention of returning her to a more versatile and sociable cruising layout.

What followed was a major restoration at respected Dennett Boat Builders, renowned for award-winning traditional boat restoration. Once out of the water, it became clear that the work required was far more extensive than first anticipated. Much of the upper deck and hull planking needed attention, together with the transom, foredeck, coach roof, wheelhouse windows and forward cabin windows. It was difficult news for owners working to a budget, but David and Susie pressed on with real commitment. Compromises were made where sensible, but never at the expense of Kalbarri’s structure or integrity.

The result is a boat transformed. Kalbarri was reconfigured with six berths, two modern heads, a shower, a new galley, new wiring and plumbing throughout, heating, bench seating to the after deck and two new engines. She now offers generous accommodation, practical systems and the comfort required for family cruising, entertaining or charter use on the Thames.

Her interior has a particularly lovely atmosphere. It is warm, spacious and inviting, with a traditional yet contemporary feel that suits her perfectly. The exterior has been restored with care, retaining the iconic lines and character of the Rampart 39 while presenting in fine order.

Kalbarri is not simply a comfortable cruiser. She is a rare survivor from the final era of wooden Rampart motor yachts, restored with affection, used with purpose and ready to be enjoyed. For those seeking space, charm, pedigree and that unmistakable retro elegance, Kalbarri is a very special boat indeed.
