Falmouth Packet 27
Traditionally styled with modern comforts
Eastlight II is a very good example of the well regarded Falmouth Packet 27… a design known for getting the fundamentals right. Built in 1993, she has the feel of a much larger boat, with reassuring weight, excellent balance and a finish that has been carefully looked after.
Her wood composite hull is a key part of that appeal. Strip cedar planking, laid in both concave and convex form, is reinforced with double diagonal Khaya and finished in Brazilian mahogany. The result is a hull that is exceptionally strong, quiet underway and comfortable in a seaway, while still being attractive alongside.
Twin Yanmar 88hp diesel engines on shaft drive, fitted with Aquadrives, provide smooth, predictable handling with minimal vibration. She is easy to manoeuvre, relaxed at cruising speed and confidence inspiring for extended coastal work. Practical Boat Owner summed the model up well… “She may not be one of the cheapest twenty seven footers on the market, but she must be one of the best.”
A substantial refit completed in 2023, with expenditure in excess of £35,000, addressed all survey recommendations and included a number of sensible upgrades. The result is a boat that feels sorted, well maintained and ready to use. Full documentation is available for inspection.
The accommodation is practical and flexible. Forward, there are two full length berths with good storage. The heads compartment includes toilet, basin and shower. A clever midships berth tucked beneath the wheelhouse dining area works well for a child, guest or occasional adult. The saloon converts to a full size double and benefits from excellent visibility and generous headroom, while the galley is well laid out with a four burner hob, sink and plenty of storage.
Equipment includes Raymarine Axiom2 Pro 12 inch navigation with Airmar DST810, shore power, hot water via calorifier and immersion, cockpit cushions, swimming ladder, full cover, battery charger and a thorough bilge pump arrangement.
Eastlight II will suit an owner who values solid engineering, sensible design and a boat that feels right on the water. For an owner who appreciates classic lines and the presence of a traditionally styled boat, but wants modern comfort, dependable systems and up to date technology, the Falmouth Packet 27 is a very good match indeed.
