I have so often admired this 102-year-old beauty as she purrs gracefully along the Henley reach. For many years she was a cherished fixture at Henley Royal Regatta, frequently chartered to fellow Phyllis Court members. She is perfectly suited for entertaining up to 12 guests, with dining tables in both the forward cockpit and the saloon. To starboard aft is a practical galley area, complemented by a Portapotti compartment opposite and, of course, an essential cocktail cabinet. The comfortable saloon seating can also serve as berths for longer river journeys.
In 2022, Evensong—renamed Miss Goodnight—underwent a significant restoration by Dennetts of Chertsey, returning her hull to excellent condition and securing her future for another century.
Her hull design, with its patented tunnel and distinctive beaver stern, delivers an incredibly smooth ride, gliding along almost without a ripple. Originally built nearly 100 years ago with an internal combustion engine (likely much larger than today’s), she now runs quietly and reliably with a Ford Watermota Sea Tiger beneath the forward cockpit’s engine box—impressively smooth and near silent.
The aft cockpit comfortably seats two in the sunshine and offers excellent visibility and access for navigation, especially handy during lock passages.
Miss Goodnight is the epitome of elegant boating and would suit either a private enthusiast or a commercial owner seeking a distinguished, vintage gentleman’s launch. She has previously won several trophies at the Thames Traditional Boat Festival (formerly the Rally), including the prestigious Bates Wheel.
The current owner wishes to retain the name Miss Goodnight. However, should her next custodian prefer, she could be returned to her original name, Evensong, to continue her story with a nod to her remarkable past.
