A characterful 1921 Thames motor yacht restoration opportunity
Dubhe is a rare and characterful Thames motor yacht with a long and much-loved history. Built in 1921 by Kings of Avonmouth, she is a Thames Vintage Boat Club member with plaque number NVET 020, and represents a wonderful opportunity for someone looking to take on a meaningful restoration project.
At 35 feet in length with a beam of 8 feet and a draft of 3 feet 9 inches, Dubhe is well proportioned for Thames cruising. Her superstructure is teak, and although the extent of any structural work required is currently unknown, she clearly shows the bones of a boat that was once beautifully cared for.
Her history, while incomplete, speaks volumes. Dubhe was an active and much-admired member of the Thames Vintage Boat Club during the 1980s and enjoyed notable success on the traditional boat circuit, winning the Clarke Roller Cup and Freebody Trophy at the Trad Boat Festival in 1987, followed by the Thames Heritage Cup in 1988. These awards are testament to the standard she was once presented to and the affection she inspired.
Today, she is undoubtedly in need of care and attention, and visually she may appear a little sad. However, stepping inside is a pleasant surprise. Her interior retains real charm, with joinery and layout that hint strongly at her former elegance. There is a warmth and atmosphere aboard that you simply can’t manufacture, Dubhe has a lovely feel about her.
Sadly, her most recent custodian has passed away, and she is now looking for a new home. For the right person, Dubhe offers the chance to restore a genuine piece of Thames heritage and, in time, see her once again become a source of pride on the river.
