When Creative Marine started out at the Secret Boatyard in Norfolk having worked previously for the Steam and Electric Launch Company in the same county under its innovative director Rupert Latham who was at the heart of the UK's electric propulsion renaissance, they immediately started building contemporary classics with electric power as standard. Whilst starting their company with some of the Steam and Electric models such as the popular Frolic 21, they wanted to introduce a boat of their own design. They engaged Andrew Wolstenholme who drew up the attractive, low wash Mayfly 16. She is a six seater in theory with room for a couple more on occasion. With a draft of 17 ins she is well suited to any inland waterway.
Beth sports a navy GRP low maintenance hull with contrasting brass fittings throughout, varnished teak inlaid decks, oiled teak rubbing strakes, a lovely brass and mahogany tiller and a 1.5kw inboard motor fitted amidships with batteries either side under some of the seating. There is still ample room however for storage. Beth wears a distinctive badge at the bow on the port and starboard sides which looks very smart indeed. A similar boat built to order by Landamores today (they bought the moulds when Creative Marine ceased their boatbuilding activities) with a pod motor rather than an inboard would cost at least twice as much as Beth.
We are looking for a third owner to take her on as she celebrates 25 years. HSC had the boat at the yard a couple of years ago for revarnishing and her excellent full length cover on a sturdy frame keeps her looking good. The trailer is a huge asset with its guiding poles for ease of launching and could enable a new owner to keep the boat on the drive ready to launch when the urge arises.
