A Little Ship , A big story … beautifully restored to an exceptional standard
Owners of Dunkirk Little Ships are often drawn not only by a love of the water, but by a deep respect for maritime history. Many come from outside the traditional boating world, inspired instead by personal stories and the powerful legacy these remarkable vessels carry. Such is the story of Ona II, now offered for sale with Henley Sales and Charter, whose extraordinary restoration has been shaped by a deeply personal bond between father and son.
By 2024, Ona II had been forgotten, lying neglected on the outskirts of Paris after more than five years of abandonment. That same year, an Englishman, motivated by a long-held dream and a single black-and-white photograph, purchased her without hesitation. In his study hung an image of a small motor yacht once owned by his father. Family research revealed that the boat in the photograph had been a Dunkirk Little Ship. Owning one had quietly become an ambition, a way to reconnect not only with maritime history, but with his father’s memory.
Ona II was acquired sight unseen through Henley Sales and Charter, and immediately committed to a no-expense-spared, twelve-month restoration. The goal was clear from the outset. To return a once sad and desperate Little Ship into a vessel that would stand as both a fine example of a classic 1931 family cruiser and a deeply personal tribute. The deadline was equally meaningful, with the intention for Ona II to debut at the 85th anniversary of Dunkirk, a goal she achieved with great admiration.
The restoration was undertaken by Dennetts of Chertsey, award-winning restorers renowned for iconic projects including Llanthony and Breda. Ona II now sits firmly among the finest examples of restored Little Ships, reflecting exceptional craftsmanship, attention to detail, and respect for original design. Structurally renewed for the next century, she benefits from modern systems throughout, including twin new Yanmar diesel engines, a Paguro generator, and Garmin navigation equipment.
Her interior is traditional yet surprisingly generous for a 36-foot vessel. The wheelhouse is spacious and welcoming, leading forward to an open-plan galley with induction hob, oven, and ample storage. The saloon features two full-length six-foot berths either side of a bespoke table inlaid with her emblem. Forward again is a heads and shower, cleverly designed and remarkably airy for a vessel of this size. The original raised and fielded panel detailing has been faithfully recreated, echoing her original interior, which had sadly deteriorated beyond saving. Aft of the wheelhouse is a snug double cabin with wardrobe space.
Ona II comfortably accommodates four, while the external steering position allows for relaxed summer cruising. The foredeck provides ample space for entertaining and enjoying time on the water. Headroom has been deliberately kept true to her original proportions, with the owner choosing authenticity over alteration, preserving her exterior originality and elegant profile.
Now offered for sale due to unforeseen health complications, Ona II is available without regret, but with the reassurance that she has been restored correctly and comprehensively. She is offered at £249,000, a figure significantly less than the total investment, with the intention of preserving this Little Ship for the next hundred years.
This is a rare opportunity to acquire a pristine Dunkirk Little Ship that offers all the joy and historical significance of ownership, without complications. The hard restoration work has been done, and the legacy secured. Ona II is ready for her next custodian.
